Metaphors in coaching – method, magic or both?

Metaphors provide a fast track into our clients’ unconscious minds. Often described by coaches and clients as powerful, profound, and even magical, metaphors allow coaching clients to talk about things that their rational minds might otherwise censor or lack the language to express. Metaphors create a doorway to the landscape of our clients’ unconscious.

 

 

This issue of Coaching Research in Practice reports on a conceptual study of the effective use of metaphor within coaching and mentoring. It provides a broad overview of metaphor use in the current literature and attempts to fill a gap by synthesising the knowledge to provide a framework for how to use metaphors effectively within coaching and mentoring.
